Current Research
My research focuses on practice theory, process philosophy, and the sociology of time, with particular interests in social organisation, change, and the transformation of everyday life. I have developed this work in substantive areas including consumption, energy demand, and public health.
Recent publications explore issues of societal rhythm, flexibility, and the biosocial, and have appeared in journals including Time and Society, Critical Public Health, Sociology of Health and Illness, Social Theory and Health, and the Journal of Organizational Sociology. Together, these contributions bring sociological theory into dialogue with contemporary debates in sustainability, health, and social change.
Two recent books extend these lines of research: and, with Elizabeth Shove and Mike Kelly, . This work has developed a practical and processual approach to conceptualising social life, with growing implications particularly in relation to non-communicable disease.
I am Co-Director of the and Editor-in-Chief of .

My teaching focuses on sociological theory, the philosophy of social science, and the sociology of consumption, and is closely informed by my research on practice theory, time, and social organisation.
My approach to teaching emphasises developing the sociological imagination and equipping students with the conceptual and analytical tools to think critically about everyday life. This is reflected in my undergraduate teaching, including convening the large first-year module The Sociological Imagination over several years, as well as in developing specialist teaching in my areas of expertise. This includes an externally open postgraduate course on , which ran annually between 2021 and 2024.
I have extensive experience in programme design, with a particular focus on student experience, assessment strategy and feedback, and the integration of research and teaching across the curriculum. As Director of Studies (2018–2021), I led a major redevelopment of the undergraduate curriculum and student experience. More recently, as part of the University’s (2025–2026), I have led the complete redesign of the BA (Hons) Sociology and Sociology and Criminology programmes, as well as the MSc in Social Research.
